Whats the point of half chaps?

i ride in breeches, ariat paddock boots, but no half chaps. i want some for christmas, but b4 i ask, i should probably know what they are, haha :) i recently read they help with leg stability, and my leg has been very unstable lately, think they would help?? what are the pros and cons of them?? thanks!!!
